There are plenty of degenerate gamblers out there who have major money problems.  But few of them ever stoop as low as Gary McGain did.

In one of the more bizarre robberies ever reported, McGain was sentenced to five years behind bars for robbing a Las Vegas bookmaker. The weapon: A potato peeler!  Apparently, McGain’s favorite kitchen item is now his favorite weapon since he obviously can’t afford a gun or even a knife.

The 29-year-old disguised a potato peeler with a sock to give it the allusion of being a gun; then he proceeded to point it at the bookmaker. The Prosecutor on the case, Iain Criddle, said, “He appeared to be carrying what was believed to be a handgun. It was half covered by a sock. He was given £550 in cash and ran off.”

As rumor has it, McGain has a major gambling problem and owes large amounts of cash to a local loan shark. And this isn’t the first time that the bookmaker in this case has met the potato peeling bandit! McGain visited once before with a potato peeler in hand.  After being arrested, McGain plead guilty to two charges of robbery and two charges of carrying an imitation handgun.

And while some people might laugh at this case, the city of Las Vegas is not laughing as evidenced by the five-year prison sentence.  Vegas has had a rash of casino bathroom robberies lately including one that involved famous poker pro Scott Montgomery.  Montgomery was playing in a WPT Fiesta al Lago poker tournament when a man came in the bathroom and threatened him; Montgomery gave him $2,000 and the man ran off.  Another man wasn’t so lucky recently after being shot and killed in the Opera House Casino bathroom.
