The unveiling of Marina Bay Sands in Singapore was one of the most anticipated grand openings ever.  After all, Las Vegas Sands spent $5.5 billion to make their 2,500-room hotel & casino come to life.  In addition to this, the company also had to cut through the red tape of Singapore’s anti-gambling culture by charging visitors a $70 fee so they could view a presentation on the downside to gambling addiction.  All of this aside…..the opening was pretty successful!

The staff at Marina Bay Sands made the 2,500-room hotel, shopping mall, restaurants, and other facilities open to the public.  Of course, the biggest attraction for visitors was the 3-acre SkyPark that sits at the top of the 60-story building; the SkyPark is home to a 150 meter swimming pool, nightclubs, and more shops.

Celebrity chefs, sports stars, and famous musicians also made their way to the opening day at Marina Bay.  Some of the musical acts that performed during Marina Bay Sands’ first day included Destiny’s Child singer Kelly Rowland, JJ Lin, and Sylvia Ratonel.  Besides the musical performances, another big event held on the opening day was the “World Championship Climb to the Sands SkyPark.”  As the name implies, 7 teams climbed all three towers of the hotel in succession before sprinting from end-to-end at the SkyPark.  New crews were on hand to greet the winners.

The opening ceremony didn’t show people everything that the massive hotel & casino has to offer.  That’s because Marina Bay still has the theater, crystal pavilions, and museum to open as the year rolls on.  Marina Bay Sands is hoping to use the momentum gained from the opening day to compete with the $4.7 billion Resorts World hotel & casino.  Resorts World doesn’t have a SkyPark to offer its visitors, but they do have a Universal Studios theme park.
